Pipistrello by Gae Aulenti

Pipistrello by Gae Aulenti

Lamp designed by Gae Aulenti in 1965 and produced by Martinelli Luce.

An undisputed icon of Made in Italy design, which is still very successful today.

The lamp was initially created by the designer for the Olivetti showrooms in Paris and Buenos Aires; it was then put into production by Martinelli Luce, which continues to have it in its catalog today. Gae Aulenti’s inspiration for the creation of this extraordinary piece was Art Nouveau, obviously mixed with the most modern taste. It was not only designed to illuminate the environment in which it is located, but to be in harmony with it. In fact, the designer wanted her lamp to be a real piece of furniture. Pipistrello looks like a mix of colors and materials, each suitable for its purpose. Strong sinuosity and elegant shape distinguish it and make it unique in the lighting scene. The name “Pipistrello” comes precisely from the dome, which can resemble the wings of a bat opening. The object is part of MoMA’s permanent collection.
