Today we introduce the story of a very famous architect and designer, dedicated in particular to green architecture. We are talking about Matteo Thun.
Matteo Thun was born in Bolzano in 1952 and his name is linked to the well-known ceramics company Thun Spa, which is currently run by his brother.
Thun studied architecture and later moved to Milan, where he met Ettore Sottsass in 1981. Together with him and other members they founded the Memphis group, for which Thun himself created several design pieces.
In 1984 he founded his own architecture and design studio, based in Milan and Munich.
Although a large part of Matteo Thun’s work is in the field of architecture, his career as a designer should not be overlooked. Among his most important pieces are: the Nefertiti and Teteta Teapot for Memphis from the 1980s, the Coffee Art collection for Illy from 1992, the Choose Lamp for Artemide from 2005, the Kauri Table for Riva 1920 from 2009, the Lisboa Chair for Very Wood from 2017, the Il Silenzio dei Colori collection for Venini from 2018, the Tubino Lamp for Panzeri from 2019 and the Rito Chair for Dèsirèe from 2020.
This shows us that in addition to being an excellent architect, very attentive to green and preserving nature, Thun is also a great designer, able to gravitate to completely different worlds.
He has collaborated with many famous brands, including Artemide, Flos, Illy, Philips, Fontana Arte, Missoni, Porsche Design, Coca Cla, Villerory & Boch, Lavazza, AEG and Campari, just to name a few. In addition to these, he has won the Compasso d’Oro Award several times for his achievements.
In recent years he founded Matteo Thun Atelier, a brand managed by him and his staff that has three main concepts at its core: uniqueness, longevity and individuality. A new collection that includes objects such as vases, lamps, knick-knacks and small furnishings and is suitable for both hotels and private homes.
He currently continues to pursue architecture and design projects, whose soul is united by his extreme attention to beauty and nature.
CURIOSITY:
Matteo Thun has completely changed his poetics over the years: he started from the eccentric and super colorful years of Memphis, to recently land to design objects much more linear, elegant and attentive to the nature that surrounds us.
